The last 12 months have seen exciting time for the RMGNA, with the success of the Reunion Luncheon leading to an increase in Membership Subscriptions and interest in the Association. Thank you to the Committee for your hard work, Julie Halton organisational skills and attention to details, Mandy, Maureen, Helene, and Chris for making the day go so smoothly and to Liz for as our brilliant MC! We are so grateful to the RMH Foundation for their support, guidance and assistance in the planning and execution of a wonderful event.
We still face the challenge of breaking into the current RMH nurses, as we try to increase our profile to all nursing staff, not just RMH trainees.
We have much to be grateful for, and as we thank Committee Members who are resigning from the Committee, Christine Murray, Robyn Reeder and Helene Johns, we openly welcome the interest from new nominees.
I am so grateful for the commitment and enthusiasm that our Committee Members have given especially Secretary Julie Halton, leading us into the digital and IT world, one that I find myself on a steep learning curve , and often slip down!
Next year is the 110th year of the Royal Melbourne Graduate Nurses' Association and we hope to celebrate it with an even bigger Reunion Luncheon on the 15th Of May- again coinciding with the celebrations of International Nurses' Day on the 12th of May. It will be a Jane Bell Scholarship year and also the book launch of '100 Years 100 Nurses'.
I hope to organise a collection of updates from past Jane Bell Scholarship recipients and Nursing Research Endowment recipients to showcase how the RM GNA have assisted in supporting the advancement of patient care and nursing education over the decades.
I thank everyone for your ongoing support and encouragement and hope to increase our profile at our beloved RMH in order for us to continue our great work and future possibilities.
As we welcome new Members, we remember with much fondness and admiration 2 giants of our Association, June Allen and Nancye Smith, who passed away and who dedicated so much of their lives to improving the lives of both patients and nurses by their vision, their care and love for their profession. We are so privileged to have had these amazing women in our midst for so many years and now reap the benefits of their passion and dedication.

Art of Nursing Award winners
Rem Zathang, graduate nurse winner
Rem makes an exceptional contribution to patient care and outcomes through her kindness, professionalism, and strong commitment to safe, high‑quality nursing practice. She consistently works collaboratively with others on the ward, communicates clearly and respectfully, and asks appropriate questions to ensure patient safety at all times.
An example of Rem’s commitment to caring and advocacy occurred when one of her patients became upset about discriminatory remarks by another patient in the room. Rem immediately reported the incident, helped move the patient to another room and spent time with the patient, reassuring them and ensuring their ongoing wellbeing. A very worthy winner.
Linda Jones, experienced nurse winner
Linda has been a highly valued nurse at RMH for over 20 years and currently works as an After-Hours Hospital Manager. Linda is deeply committed to supporting staff across all levels and disciplines throughout each night shift, balancing competing priorities while striving to improve patient care through timely bed allocation and effective prioritisation. She is widely recognised as a kind, supportive, and capable leader who is trusted by the organisation and Executive on Call team to provide effective leadership and operational oversight after hours.
Linda’s ongoing contribution to RMH clearly demonstrates her commitment to improving patient outcomes while balancing operational demands and staff wellbeing. Linda definitely personifies the Art of Nursing award’s expectation of excellence in nursing care, support and leadership.
